There is still some resistence to the concept of equality for the citizens of Bonaire, Statia and Saba (‘BES’), which are to become an integral part of Holland. The resistence is understandable, but incorrect. And in the end, equality will win anyway. The only question is when? Our representatives (Anthony, Burney, Ramonsito) were in Holland for negotiations at the end of January.
They have returned with a ‘List of Decisions’, the most most important being that the level of government services in BES will be ‘acceptable within Holland’.
The words chosen here are important. First of all it says ‘within Holland’. Not witin the Kingdom. That’s good! However, they still use the word ‘acceptable’, not ‘equal’. Nor is there any reference to the social and economic level. So, it could be that there’s a good sign on the horizon, but there’s no certainty yet.
